I think it has more to do with the overall design than anything.
The 500, even when popping off magnum loads, tops out at approx
10,300psi in the chamber. The bolt is a single lugger....and even if
it's rock-solid at normal 12ga pressures, it's probably *not* safe at
normal "centerfire" pressures.
Something as little as a 9mm pushes 30,000psi.
Some of the oldtimer blackpowder loadings like the .38 Special and the
..38/40 Win, and the .44/40 Win would probably work ok. Those average
out at around 15,000psi. I have no doubt that you could find someone
to make you a barrel to fit, but is that worth the cost?
