I learned french once.

What I learned, is that if you're learning french and speak to a damned frog, they will insult you for not speaking it perfectly. Some won't even talk to you if you don't speak it perfectly.

I was in France last summer, for the D-Day 60th festivities. The French people were, without exception as gracious as they could possibly be. We saw more American flags on windowsills than you see here on Memorial Day. We saw French teenagers applauding a busload of veterans as it drove by. A number of French strangers of all ages stopped my Dad on the sidewalks and thanked him for coming to their aid in 1944.
Even later, when we left the Normandy area and drive around the interior, the Loire valley, Brittany, Paris, the natives were just wonderful. We spoke hardly any French, but nobody ridiculed our attempts, and most switched to good English without missing a beat, once they realized we were Americans. We saw not one rude French person in almost a week. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Now, their political leaders are a different story. But no doubt they feel the same way, and we did not discuss politics while there.
