From what I've read many are effectively scams.  For example, selling
one year supplies of rations that amount to only 500 calories a day.

If there are no ratings of these people, do people here have opinions
on which ones they would trust?

Add another vote for Walton Feed as a good place to do business. I've done business with them and was completely satisfied. It's always a good idea to read the fine print though.
