Re: Survival straws; flint strikers

- If I were in an attic after Katrina with, say, some clean cloth, a clean
jug and some iodine drops or some Survival Straw filters, could I do
anything to get the flood water to be sort of drinkable? I understand that
there would still be carcinogens and might be some viruses in the water,
but, if I filtered the water through cloth, let it sit, and used
filtration or water purification stuff on the clearest water, could that
be a short-term substitute for clean water?
CY: I think some other posters have answered this, adn done well with the
answers.

- Flint striker: I never even tried to smoke, and I've never really
learned to light a match, and I hate the idea of carrying a butane lighter
around. I remember that it was really easy to start Bunsen burner flames
with flint strikers in chemistry class. Is it possible to use a
chemistry-class-type flint striker and a fuzzy cotton ball soaked in
petroleum jelly to start a fire, or is the striker spark too cool to set
the cotton ball on fire?
CY: A flint striker like Blast Match, or Strike Force will light up a
vaseline cotton ball, or in some cases I've used a Strike Force to light
paper towels, or paper napkin soaked wiht pizza oil (the yellow oil on top
of a pepperoni pizza; I blot it off instead of eat it). With the cotton
balls, the trick is fluff out the cotton ball so you have lots of surface,
adn then spark into the fluff. One will burn for two or three minutes, with
a two inch or so flame. Works n icely, actually.
