When we initially really started watching Charley, the track on the hurricane put it up the west coast of Florida (over Kris and Tampa) as a Cat II hurricane. When suddenly on Friday afternoon, it started to make a right turn and make landfall earlier and it's size had increased first to Cat III, then to Cat IV and suddenly a due east track put the eye over us
An important point, especially for people new to hurricane areas: Hurricanes can jump in strength on very short notice. Katrina jumped from a Cat One to a Cat 5 between Florida and New Orleans, in just a couple of days.
That's not mentioned, partly because the results can be used for political purposes, but mostly because it was not an exceptionally fast jump in power.
BTW, there's a dozen or so hurricanes every year in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Mexico. They have hit the head of the Gulf of California. They could easily hit Los Angeles as well.
