to mention the barn cats thing they are something to climb up,

in knitting terms they are called a "cowl". they can be just
neckwarmer size, or they can be somewhat larger, allowing you to pull
them up around your ears as a sort of hood.
yes, they are very practical for farm work, as well as great for
kids, since they have to try a lot harder to 'lose' them <g>, plus
they don't snag up when climbing trees.
