Re: Firewood, the most expensive fuel

I get a laugh out of these guys that spend $800 on a chain saw, then
spend half or more of their free time all summer long cutting
firewood. They burn up gallons of gas, and oil. Then they buy
trailers and other wood hauling equipment. In the process they bust
up their trucks, blow tires and do other mechanical damage to their
vehicles in the woods, not to mention more gas. They finally get the
wood home, and have to spend another thousand dollars on a log
splitter. Of course during this whole process, they have to spend a
small fortune of chainsaw repairs and new chains. Of course none of
this accounts for the many accidents that occur when trees dont fall
just right, and someone gets badly injured, which costs a fortune in
the hospital and lost days of work.

Finally, winter comes. Guess what happens? They have to run out into
deep snow to get firewood, get themselves sick from the cold, fall on
the ice and break bones, and struggle with heavy logs all winter long.
Not to mention the initial cost of the wood burning equipment, special
chimneys, chimney cleaning, and the high risk of house fires.

These are the same people who tell me that I should burn wood to save
money........ Yeah, right. I want to waste all of my summers cutting
wood, fight with chain saws, wreck my truck, spend a fortune of
chainsaws, their repairs, trailers, log splitters, and more..... Plus
the likelyhood of broken bones, injuries, hospitalization, and house
fires....... NO THANKS. I'll spend the money of propane, and be able
to relax in the winter in a warm house, I wont have to run outside at
3am in horrid weather to get wood, and wont have to keep opening the
door allowing heat to escape everytime I need more wood.

I burned wood for 3 years. I spent more on chainsaws, repairs, and
gasoline than what it costs to heat my home with propane. Halfway
through that first winter I ran out of wood and spent more money than
I would have spent to get propane, not to mention that over half the
stuff I bought was so huge and knotty it would not fit in my stove,
and I was not able to afford $1000 or more for a wood splitter, so I
busted my back splitting it by hand. The 3rd year I had a propane
furnace installed. The initial cost was high, but now I spend around
$1000 per winter to heat my house and dont have all the work, or the
hassle of wood.

I will never burn wood again. I still have a small wood stove, just
in case I run out of propane or the electric fails. I pile of a small
pile of wood from tree trimming, and save all my scrap lumber to burn.
On the coldest days I might burn a few logs. The rest of the time
it;s just there for emergencies. That's enough for me.

Firewood is the most expensive fuel when all the details are
considered.

It's cheaper than the electricity we heat with, even using gas to run the chainsaw. We use our tractor to get the wood back up the hill and we have wagons here already that we can haul it on. We have a splitter, that was our most expensive piece of wood equipment. It works for us..our woodstove heats most of our 1200 square foot of living space as for running outside at 3am, you just didn't keep enough indoors to heat overnight with in your wood box..boo hoo..We've burned wood for the eight year's we've been here and it does save us quite a bit of cash..
