Re: California city boy wants to go rural and self-sufficient, but not in California

FarmI,

I will give everything you said serious consideration. Thank you for
your advice. I could argue many of your points, but I've no doubt you
could argue my arguments. Your statements were humbling but worthwhile.

:-)) Glad you picked up my attempts to instil a "humbling" element in my
reply to you. It was quite deliberate on my part.

Now that you are in more reasonable frame of mind, lets start again.

This ng is a community. A worlwide rural community and we've mostly known
each other online for years. Asking a question here is quite similar to
moving to a rural community.

The first response you got when you started this thread was from Terri. She
is one of our more mild mannered and decent regular posters in this ng and
she's a long time rural type. She knows about rural living in the US and
can teach you much when it comes to rural self reliance as many of the
things she does would fit right in to what you seem to have in mind

If you managed to get up her left nostril and get her to respond the way she
did, then you should take note of her comments. She lives in the US and she
is picking up things in what you write that cause her to think "Danger Will
Robinson" if you ended up living next door to her.

You also got a response from Pete Heubner, another mild mannered and decent
regular here. He's in NZ but he is also a 'real' rural dweller who runs a
real farm, not a 5 acre block. He too could tell you much that would be of
help to you.

I mention those two people in particular because, of the regualr posters
here, they are perhaps our most consistently 'nicest' people. They seldom
get upset but when they do they are worth noting.

I live in Australia and unlike the other two regulars I've mentioned, I'm
not at all mild mannered or decent. I frequently move into jugular ripping
mode. I thought I would give you some chance to redeem yourself, and you
have attempted to do that.

So, take it on board that you just got your first lesson in rual living from
a bunch of rural dwellers

First impressions matter when you move to a rural area and that applies here
in cyber land as much as it does when you move to a rural area. Money or
position or background don't matter as much in the country as they do in the
burbs. What matters is who you are as a person. It is personality traits
you (and your wife) possess that will help you settle happily and
comfortably in the country.

Country living is much harder than burb living. Take that as gospil. The
distances travelled are longer, everything takes longer to do, everything is
harder to get, what you want/need is harder to get, you need to compromise
and you need to be organised, you need to be persistent and you need to be
happy within yourself.

What have you done, or can do where you live now to prepare you for a rural
move? Have you grown veg or fruit? Do you have chooks (chickens)? You own
guns, so I presume you do something with them. What do you do with them?
What experience do you have with farm animals?
