how hard is it to remove a fieldstone fireplace about 5'W
x
4'D x 10' high? if that damn thing weren't there i could
put in a nice efficient woodstove...

Depends on how heavy the stones are. Imo the bigger
question is what is it holding up that may come tumbling
down when it's removed?

nothing. it looks stupid because the room has a vaulted
ceiling (13' or so at the peak) & the fireplace only goes to 9
or 10 feet, then just has a flat top (which has a 'secret
compartment' built in where the previous owner kept a
handgun).
the stones aren't huge, but there's lots of cement involved.
it'd be messy, for sure :)

Yes, when I took the top 8' off a block/tile chimney last year, it was
definitely messy ,,, but doable.

Instead, why not put in an all-fuel stainless chimney for a wood stove?
If the fireplace chimney has never been relined, it's probably not safe
for continuous use anyway.

because it has those right angle bends. it can't have a liner
put in without tearing it down anyway.
the chimney goes like:

I wasn't clear ... I meant a separate chimney, not a liner for the
existing one. Of course, with a 13' ceiling, there aren't a whole lot of
viable solutions.
