You are absolutely right about the alterations to the Bible over time.
When I first honestly understood how a translator's beliefs could
color the word they chose (thus affect the meaning of the passage) I
sat down and cried like a baby.
In time I learned about Strong's Concordance - a compilation of the
English words used in Biblical translations, indexing them to the
original Hebrew or Greek word and offering definitions, word roots
etc. for each word in the Bible. Combing Strong's with some study time
(or learning the original languages) one may come much closer to
understanding what the Bible is to teach us. Granted, I suspect there
are books rejected when the books of the Bible were first chosen that
truly belonged etc. But I've noted important concepts are repeated
throughout the Bible, offered via a number of books in a variety of
manners. I highly doubt any major lessons are entirely unknown.
I highly doubt the Bible is a collection of "myths and legends."
Archeology has discovered a number of sites backing up the Bible. For
instance: They have found the chariot wheels at the crossing of the
red sea. Recent discoveries backup the telling regarding the walls of
Jericho. (http://www.answersingenesis.org/creation/v21/i2/

It's on the Internet. It must be true.

The Bible itself contains knowledge not available to mortal man at the
time of its writing. The book of Leviticus reads like a fairly modern
day health manual. (heck, it wasn't all THAT long ago the AMA type
folks would take away a surgeon's practice for being superstitious
and washing his hands prior to each surgery) The Bible foretold of the
overthrow of Babylon 200 years before it happened. (Jer 50:38; Isa
13:17-19, 44:27 - 45:1) Isaiah knew the world was round long before it
was generally known and accepted. (Isa 40:22). Then again, Job 26:7
says that God is "hanging the earth upon nothing." This is true, for
astronomers know that the earth has no visible means of support.
Simply stated, when one endeavors to study the Bible and verify it's
contents, it is possible in some instances. I have read on more than
one occasion historians referring to the Bible as a highly accurate
book in a historic sense. If it is accurate in a historical sense, and
it has accurately foretold of things to come, I fail to see a line of
reasoning leading me to assume the remainder of it is naught but
hogwash. Quite the contrary.
I have yet to find Biblical evidence that God is anything other than
"interested and
interfering." My own personal experiences confirm that He is, and a
number of those I know could also to attest having experienced His
hand active within their lives.

Assuming for the sake of argument that I am wrong, I still do not see
the danger you mention. What harm comes from following the Bible and
believing I should love my neighbor as I love myself?
