We can't take her to a vet because, first the nearest one is
quite a
long way off and they do NOT see Rottweillers, Dobermans, Chows
etc.

What'd'ya mean the vet won't see Rotties, Dobbies and Chows??? I've
never heard of anything like that!!

Oh yeah, they're getting real paranoid in these parts. Heck, you can't
even
get insurance if you own one. We've had a lot of kids getting mauled
by
"family pets". Texas passed a law that goes into effect in September I
believe that if your dog gets out and hurts someone you go to jail. Up
to
LIFE if the person dies.

Your excuses don't wash.

Dog safety legislation has no relevance whatever, to being able to get
vet treatment. No competent vet would be unable to handle those breeds
so would have no reason to refuse to treat one.. Vets treat uninsured
animals all the time. Mine, for instance. I just pay the bills as they
arise.

I think he's probably referring to a Homeowner's fire/liability policy.
So, yes, some insurers won't write a policy including liability coverage
if certain breeds of dog will be kept on the property. But I never
heard
of a veterinarian who would refuse treatment to a particular breed of
dog.
(They might refuse to board them.)

Although it's not common in dogs, encephalitis from a West Nile Virus
infection is a possibility.

You know, that's a very distinct possibility but I didn't know dogs could
get it. But we have numerous cases of that all around us now.

Usually dogs don't show symptoms but in one study, WNV antibodies were
found in 10-15% of dogs.

Some people
have died from it. But one thing we have going for us is that the crop
dusters spray the area for mosquitos about twice a year. Kind of a good
will
gesture to keep us from bitching about them buzzing our animals.

I washed her face and eyes really good last afternoon. This morning she is
jumping and hopping just like she used to do and seems to want to do nothing
but play. I think she's pretty well back to normal. I'm still at a loss as
to what ailed her but I'm going to keep a close eye out for snakes, mean
weeds and mosquitos etc.

I don't was to give the impression that there are no vets down here. There
are a number of them but as we are in the middle of cattle country and rice
country these vets only tend to large animals. They just don't mess with
dogs and cats and the like. The only one that does is a number of miles away
and he simply refuses to fool with any type of dog that is on the state
dangerous animal list ???? and Rottweillers are on that list along with Pit
Bulls, Chows and Dobermans.
