Although it's not common in dogs, encephalitis from a West Nile Virus
infection is a possibility.

Good catch, Ann. So far (touch wood) the common mosquito-borne diseases
haven't hit Alaska, so I have no experience with them. I know that West
Nile Virus is endemic in many parts of the US now, but we haven't seen
any up here yet.
