We can't take her to a vet because, first the nearest one is quite a
long way off and they do NOT see Rottweillers, Dobermans, Chows etc.
What'd'ya mean the vet won't see Rotties, Dobbies and Chows??? I've**
never heard of anything like that!!
Oh yeah, they're getting real paranoid in these parts. Heck, you can't even
get insurance if you own one. We've had a lot of kids getting mauled by
"family pets". Texas passed a law that goes into effect in September I
believe that if your dog gets out and hurts someone you go to jail. Up to
LIFE if the person dies.
Your excuses don't wash.
Dog safety legislation has no relevance whatever, to being able to get
vet treatment. No competent vet would be unable to handle those breeds
so would have no reason to refuse to treat one.. Vets treat uninsured
animals all the time. Mine, for instance. I just pay the bills as they
arise.
It does not cost a whole lot for a simple vet consult, just to
examine the dog and give you a very good idea what the problems are. At
least then you won't risk causing the dog any problems from the side
effects of powerful, wrong medication based on misdiagnosis by
yourself.
Janet.
We had a local vet who refused to do farm calls for horses. He was
afraid of them. He'd give us free advice on the phone, but absolutely
refused to come out or let us bring one to the clinic.
Fortunately, he sold his clinic to a vet from Ireland who *loves* large
animals. (She worked on English dairy herds when she did her vet
training.) She's also good with dogs & cats and their owners.
Janet -- there *are* places in America where the closest vet is very far
away. My mining camp is a 6 hour drive to the closest vet, in Fairbanks.
The first two hours of that trip are on a dirt road, after you go
upriver 30 miles in a jonboat (a flatbottomed skiff) to the carpark.
We did that trip one night after our Rottie tried to kill a porcupine.
Banjo had quills deep in this throat. We couldn't deal with it without
tranquilizers and didn't have any in camp. Banjo was slinging blood all
over the van the whole way. It was a *long* trip.
