Jan,

I might be mistaken but I seem to remember a year, or maybe more,
back
that you either had a problem with a dog or offered advice to someone
that
did. If not, please excuse the question.

I have a Rottweiller that's about 8 years old. It was husky and very
healthy one day and then the next day it was kinda like a drunk sailor
stumbling all over the place. It had a small somewhat circular bald spont
just over its left eye and a quite large bald spot on its right
hindquarter.
We treated both for ringworms and they have pretty much gone away.

But she kept stumbling for almost a month and we assumed hip
displacia
and started giving her crushed up "joint" pills. Also, we are right in
the
middle of rice country and mosquitos are everywhere all the time. But we
have always given a dose of ivomectin once a month and also we keep that
advantage or whatever on her and never see any flies or mosquitos or
fleas
on her. So we don't think it is heart worms.

We also have an overabundance of copper heads and water moccasins.
I
think she got in an argument with one and it popped her on the eye but
really got her good on the hindquarter. Right from the start her eyes
were
matted up with what looked like pus and that lasted for about two weeks
and
then, as we would wash them off every day, it finally started to get
better.
She seems to be pretty close to her old self now except that her eyes
still
matt up and seem to have pus around them every day.

We can't take her to a vet because, first the nearest one is quite a
long way off and they do NOT see Rottweillers, Dobermans, Chows etc. Do
you
have any idea why her eyes would be matted up like they are? I've done
the
google bit and pretty much ruled out everything I've found.

Tks

It's not heartworms. (I lost a great coonhound to them, before everyone
was routinely dosing with Hartguard/ivomec.)

It doesn't sound like snakebite to me. She would have gotten
reallyreally swollen up around the site of each bite. I'm not sure, but
a bite over the eye might have killed her...

What'd'ya mean the vet won't see Rotties, Dobbies and Chows??? I've
never heard of anything like that!!

Oh yeah, they're getting real paranoid in these parts. Heck, you can't even
get insurance if you own one. We've had a lot of kids getting mauled by
"family pets". Texas passed a law that goes into effect in September I
believe that if your dog gets out and hurts someone you go to jail. Up to
LIFE if the person dies.

Bald spots like that can be caused by the dog falling down. It's like
you skinning your knee. Same difference.

I would suspect a poison or poisonweed as the cause of stumbling around,
but not if it lasted a month, unless the dog kept getting into it.

Hip dysplasia would already be showing in a Rottie that age. You'd have
known that she had it long ago. It gives them a funny gait in the rear
that looks like their hip joints are loose, when you watch the dog walk
away from you. It's pretty obvious.

For the *** eyes, get some antibiotic ointment at the drug store
(Neosporin, Triple Antibiotic Ointment, something like that) gently
clean her eyes out every day with something like a sopping wet washcloth
or cottonball (if the goop is drying and crusting around here eyes, it
can take a little while to hold the washcloth there and let the crusty
stuff soften) and put a little dab of ointment in each eye every day.
She won't like it, but it should clear them up.

Someone over on the gardening ng said that tea made with comfrey is good
for clearing up goopy eyes in pets. I'll see if I can find that post. Do
you have any comfrey growing at home? I have a small, commercial crop
here. (It escaped the garden and got into our hay meadow in one spot.)
I could send you some.

Lots of medicial herbs are good for clearing up eyes. What grows in your
neighborhood? Where are you? I'm guessing that you're in Louisana or
close by, from the snakes & rice crops.

I'm not a veterinarian (standard disclaimer). Just a life-long dog owner.

I'm sure Janet B. and the other gals around here will jump in with
better advice than mine : )

Jan

Thanks a bunch. I've thought about poison from a plant. There is a chinese
tallow tree in her pen. I've lost cows to those dang things but I don't know
if it would make a dog sick. We have comfrey in the garden at times. She's
coming back around pretty darn good now. So, I'll just try to get the eyes
cleared up and I think we'll have it whipped. I appreciate your help. Stay
warm. Winter's a-coming on.
