I'm getting more of those shutoff valves.
Good move, but just remember that you're treating symptoms, not the root cause.
The root cause is that the float valve inside the carburetor has stuck in the
open position and will allow gas to drain through the carb, past the rings of
the piston, and into the oil.
If this is the only trouble with the carb, you can usually just remove the float
bowl and clean this valve without having to remove or further disassemble the
carb.

I did check the float valve. Float appeared to be undamaged and the valve appeared to be seating as it should have. (Hard to tell when you have to stick a mirror underneath to view it at all.) What I think happened was that the not quite full tank expanded in the 92F temp and created enough pressure to overwhelm the puny float valve which looks more like a check than a complete shutoff.
*IF* that happened, you need to clear the vent holes in the gas cap - most likely that is not the cause.
The best advice given is to remove the float & clean the valve - it doesn't take much crud to cause a problem - as you noted, the valve is puny, but it is sufficient when clean.
