Can you ballpark the timeframe on that?

2 years? 5 years?

I can't, really. It depends on lots of things - contamination, moisture, usage,
filter material composition, and others. Just check the air filter at least
once a year. It probably needs cleaned or replaced that often anyway. If you
have a foam air filter and it's crusty or crumbly, replace it. Usually there
will be a sticker or imprinted instructions on air filter care posted very close
to the air filter right on the engine or equipment.

Most air filters are easy to access, often without tools.

I have a Ferris commercial mower that has an automotive type round paper filter
with a foam band around it. About once a year I have to replace it. I can
remove it and blow it clean, both the paper filter and the foam band, but the
mower will still choke and belch black smoke and barely run. A new filter fixes
it right up.

I have another Wright commercial mower with a larger paper air filter and I have
never needed to replace it. Last week I blew it off with compressed air, the
first time I've even seen this filter in 2 years of use.
