I just obtained a Honda EM3500x generator. My guess is that it has not seen much use. An even better guess is that this has been sitting around unused for a number of years.
It really looks brand new. I opened the dip stick do-dad, and a lot of liquid came out. Obviously too full. To me, it seemed like very thin oil, then I noticed a gas smell to it. The fuel valve was in the open position. Did the gas tank drain into the crankcase over time?
Aside from draining the crankcase and replacing the oil, properly, and checking the spark plug, is there anything else I should do, given that this has been sitting for a long time, and is in this awkward state?
What vintage is this machine? Any other thoughts?
thanks.
I had this happen to my lawn mower a few weeks ago. Usually when I'm done using it, there isn't much fuel left in the tank. After the dry spell ended, I got it out, checked the oil (added a little), and filled the gas tank which emptied the can. I knew I'd need more than one tank to finish the job so I put the can in the car and went off and filled it up. Came back, and the darn thing wouldn't start. It usually starts on the first pull -- this time after 4 yanks I pulled the plug and it was wet. Dried it out, pulled few more times. Plug was wet again. Took the compressor and blew air into the cylinder before putting the plug back in. Started, ran rough and smokey for about 20 seconds then shut down. Looked at the gas tank and it was nearly half gone. Pulled the dipstick and it was too full and gas-stinky. So I drained the gas tank, drained the oil, added new oil, squirted a little 2-cycle oil in the cylinder and turned it over a few times, put the plug back in, p
ut 1/4 of a tank of gas in and it started up on the first pull.
The next day I went over to the implement dealer and bought a fuel shutoff valve. While installing it, I noticed that the fuel line was very checked -- sure enough it had a pinhole in it so I replaced it too.
I'm getting more of those shutoff valves.
