Whats the best way to get rid of rats in a barn feedroom? I always do
my best to keep the feed put away, but there is always a few pieces
spilled. I cant use poison since I have cats. I also have horses in
the barn and I know rodents tend to carry feed as well as poison. So,
poison is NOT an option. The cats keep the mice under control, but
putting cats in that feed room, even keeping them hungry, and they
still dont get rid of the rats. I've tried snap traps, they work on
mice, but not rats. Dogs, such as a rat terrier are not an option
either. None of us like dogs, and we dont need dogs hurting our cats.
That says what we cant use, or what dont work. What can we use that
is safe for our cats and horses, yet will get rid of these rats. I am
deadly afraid of them, and I have seen them and hear them squeek in
the feed room behind our dead freezer chest where we store our feed.
They got to go. I am deadly afraid to even go in that room lately.

I'm afraid your only other option is to tear the barn down. Of course,
the rats will probably move into the house...

Seriously, you could always pay a fumigator to tent the barn and kill
everything in it, but if the rats have burrows, even that might not
work.

You should revisit the rat poison. Warfarin is unlikely to bother a
horse, and you can feed your cats vitamin K as a prophylactic to
exposure. Check with your vet for details.
