The question was a math question, not a knitting question.
It was designed to make it easy to work the volume
relationship between the two spheres in your head. The
volume of a sphere is proportional to the cube of the
radius, so a sphere with a radius of 2 will have eight
times the volume of a sphere with a radius of 1. The
question was obviously designed to trip up the girls who
know more about knitting than they know about math.

Hey, I *said* it was a trick question.

i wonder if it's stupid word problems like that that made it
"common knowledge" that girls can't do math?
BTW, i looked up the book the OP got the quoted material from
& found one for sale online for $35. i'd rather actually see
it first though, but if it has practical applications for the
math it teaches, it might be worth getting. my worst
difficulties with any maths, from algebra to calculus & trig
were when it was taught as theoretical. show me a *use* for it
& i can do anything ;)
