Just FYI, I got a Harbor Freight catalog in the mail today, and they
have an electric chain saw sharpener on sale for $29.99. That's the
cheapest price I have ever seen for one. I think they just crossed my
price point.
Item 93213-8UHH
A replacement grinding wheel is $4.99, Item 91903-0UHH (that's a zero)
http://www.harborfreight.com
cut and paste the item number in and you'll get to see
a picture and read some stuff about this tool.
Their web site quotes $59.99. Still looks like a bargain.
That's the web price. The catalog price is $10 less. Click "order from
printed catalog" and use the code I posted. It will come up in the cart
at $29.99
If you put together a $50 order, you can use coupon code 816-986-139 for
another $5 off. I went ahead and ordered a rotary laser level kit
(92801-1uhh) for $40, because I really need one. I hope it's bright
enough to use in daylight, because I have a lot of concrete forms to
build.
Harbor freight is a good source for el cheapo tools that you only use
once in a while. I bought a $149 airless paint sprayer from them 10
years ago that painted both the inside and outside of my house, plus the
barn. It was still working the last time I used it. All told, I have
probably run over 100 gallons of paint through it. I expect it to die
at any time, but the house painting project alone, with exposed rafter
eaves and 4" t1-11 grooves, saved me days of work. It has paid for
itself.
I spring for quality for those tools I use all the time. The Skil 77,
the Porter Cable reciprocating saw, the Husquvarna chainsaw, the Makita
4" offset grinder and the Milwaukee 1/2" drill motor will last me for
decades, if not forever. Even my splitting maul, shovels, etc. have
fiberglass handles. However, when I know I won't use a tool often, I go
for cheap and just write the cost off to the project I am working on.
The $30 for the chain sharpener goes against next winter's heating bill,
and the $40 for the laser level goes against the construction cost of my
new shop.
