Did you know that the word tip came form the initials of To
Insure Promptness?

really? then it should be called a 'tep', since the word in
the middle is ensure, not insure.

It is insure if the guy creating the phrase used it.
Where did the word come from if not the above?

(i'll kindly assume that form is a typo for from)

I vote with my feet at those places and go to the places
where the hired help do there job without demanding
charity.

thier

At those places, I at times will tip, due to them not
acting like they deserve it or something and just doing
there job.

the grammar in that sentence is so horrendous, i'll just point
out the thier again <shudder>

Changing the subject instead of addressing the subject.
Typical of those trying to push an unjustifiable stance.

I don't need or want them to hang out at my table and brown
nose me. Just get me my food and leave me alone to eat in
peace.
Usually I go to buffet and don't even want that much
interaction.

ah, you're one of those both trotters in the trough types, i
see. that explains a lot...

Still not addressing the subject I see.

Not at all.
I have been pointing out that we are talking about a
charity. You are trying to justify paying protection money
to the punk on the street that will "watch" your car while
you are in the store.

charity? i don't think you have any clue what charity is.

Charity is something given that is not earned.
That would cover tips 99.9999% of the time.

I think that this type of thinking should be stopped and
people willing to do there job for the pay agreed on should
be hired in there place.

i doubt you stop to think ever.
for the third time, it's THIER. there is a place.
waitstaff are hired at signifigantly lower than minimum wage,
with the expectation that tips will supply the rest of thier
income. therefore, waitstaff *are* doing thier jobs for the
agreed upon wage. customers like you stiff them out of thier
'performance pay'.

There agreed upon wage is between the owner and the staff.
It has nothing to do with the customer.
Unless the customer thinks they deserve more then they are getting.
And I don't.
Their work was comparable to their pay, when compared to other jobs.

I also think that threatening me to coheres me into giving
them charity is also a way of thinking that should be
stopped.

coerce.
how do waitstaff threaten you?

Tip me or I will do nasty things to your food before you get it.
It was one of the justifications for tipping.
Read the rest of the posts so that you can keep up.

Tip or I will spit in your food is no better then pay me to
watch your car or I will scratch up your car and break out
your windows.

yawn.

Both is an example of extortion and should be considered
criminal.

both are examples of...
did you drop out in 6th grade?

Still refusing to address the subject I see.

What you are talking about is paying someone to do a job,
as in do something for them and they do something for you.
I not only do that all the time, but and supportive of the
fact that these waitress can go get a job that does that
instead of being a mooch and expecting charity.

am supportive...
not all waitstaff can get other jobs. there may not be
anything available that fits into thier schedule. many
waitstaff are students, single parents or both. one takes the
job where one has the most potential to make a living wage in
the hours one has available.

If it pays a living wage, then why the push for me to tip?
Lots of people have the above situations, but only a few wait tables.
Most people waiting tables are not boys, but boys also have the above
stated problems.
Only boys are capable of dealing with those problems and still get a
real job?

Not all food places pay nothing but tips.

no, McD's pays minimum. :p

You tip them?
If not, why not?
They apparently (according to your statement) make less then those
waiting tables.

And not all jobs are food places.

but restaurants have the most flexable hours & the best
potential to make a decent income.

Again, then why to push for me to tip?

Now you are insulting me due to you being unable to
actually justify that charity over any of the other bums
out there.

no, i think i'm just pointing out you're not too bright...

Bright enough to take a real job and not expect people to give me a
hand out just because I handled there food.
Or do you tip other jobs that pay crap wages?

You pay the guy at the stop light that washed your window?

you live in a city?

Irrelevant.
Answer the question instead of trying to change the subject.

The cook at the restaurant?
The dish washer?
The buss boy?

in many restaurants the waitperson's tips are divided between
all of these at the end of the shift.

Sure they are.
They all go into a big jar and then equally divided between everyone
there.
That is the incentive to give good service the other guy spouted about.

Rarely are the tips given to anyone other then the person picking them
up.
And if they are, then why should I give the cook that burned my stake
anything when I was just trying to pay the waitress for doing her job
well?

Everyone involved in your meal at the McDonlds?

i wouldn't eat at McDonald's, but fast food joints pay at
least minimum wage, so the workers don't get tips.

Why not?
They get crap wages.
And not enough hours to live on.
But they are not worthy of making a living?
You already said that they make less then a person waiting tables.
