My Wheel Horse tractor uses a Kohler K301 12hp engine. The engine
falters and stalls out when under load. Without much warning it starts
to sputter and slows down. That continues even if the load is removed,
coughing and running very rough till it dies or the ignition is killed.
It starts right back up in the normal fashion and continues to run
fine till more high grass is encountered. Heat does not seem to be an
issue as it does the same thing when throwing heavy snow. It has ACR.
Has anybody encountered similar problem?
Thanks
Sounds like carburetor tune-up time. However, the first thing you
should do is replace the fuel filter and see if that solves the problem.
And put an eyeball on the fuel line for cracks that might be letting air
into the fuel stream.
Had one of those drive me nuts for weeks before I finally pinned it down
- At idle or under light load, it ran great. But as soon as the engine
started to lug and the governor tried to goose it back up, the engine
would bog and stutter in a vicious cycle that would eventually KO it.
Let it sit for as long as it took to reach down and pull the rope, and
she'd fire right up, nice as you please - Until the next time the engine
bogged and the governor tried to bring it back up.
It took "shotgunning" the hose (after a filter change (air and fuel) a
carb teardown, clean, and rebuild, and half a dozen other things that
probably needed doing anyway) as a "what the hell... It's cheap, and
it's about the only thing left that I *HAVEN'T* tried" item.
When I figured out that had cured it, it took clamping one end of the
fuel line on a bolt as a plug, and the other end to the air-compressor,
then dipping it in a bucket of water to locate the leaking spot.
