Wow. Assuming a half pound per, that's about ten tons of herbivores.
Smaller body mass = more food per pound of animal...

This was now decades ago but the damage was appalling. It is no
accident that the favoured hat of Australian farmers is a felt hat
called the Akubra - it was made by felting rabbit fur. There were
rabbit freezing works in many place around the country and our very
small local village and the village next door both had freezing workd.

Australia still has plants???

Now if does but a lot fo plants were eaten into danger or extinction -
especially in the drier areas..

No population explosion among the snakes?

Nope - but certainly in the cat and fox populations. Currently
Macquarie Island (int he Antarctic and I think an Australian Island
or protectorate) is being desimated by rabbits.
