Larry, bio diesel, good find, but what do you have to add to make it work?
And that comes from.
Alcohol, vegetable or animal fats, lye. Methanol can be distilled out
of wood or straw. Ethanol can be fermented out of many crops, and oil
crops are common. Biofuels may not be able to fuel an industrial
society, but they can sure fuel the farms, with less loss of food value
than feeding horses or oxen to do the same work.
It has also been interesting to watch farmers make the conversion to low
fuel agriculture. It's getting pretty rare to see someone plowing or
cultivating any more. Planting is done using no-till equipment and
weeding is done chemically over Roundup-Ready crops.
During WWII, people got along just fine on a ration of 3 gallons of
gasoline a week. On a light motorcycle, that gives you virtually
unlimited travel. Even the heavy road bikes get 45+ mpg. In 2008,
Mercedes is going to introduce their FourTwo mini car into the USA. I
understand it averages about 50 mpg city and 65 mpg country. On 3
gallons a week, you could commute normally if you lived within 15 miles
of your job. Ride a bike a couple days a week, or carpool, and you
could even make that summer trip to Yellowstone.
We are a long ways from TEOTWAWKI. There will be inevitable economic
disruptions, but we can maintain an industrial civilization for
centuries yet.
