We staked newspaper around the base of the tree and poured dry earth
(Diatomamus Earth) on top of the newspaper. We then made a 4" wide
circle of axle grease around the trunk of the tree.
The dry earth is returned to the nest of the ants and they all begin to
die. The axle grease keeps them from going up the trunk of the tree.
As for birds eating the fruit, nets are the only thing we found that
worked. Expensive for the first year, but will last for ever if taken
care of at the end of the season.

It's getting close to the time when the fig trees will start producing.
This brings out the ants who think they have first claim to the fruit.
What can I use to evict these little beasties from the area without using
pesticides or chemicals?
