Caught a bit of a discussion on tv this morning and the remark "As long as
they behave like citizens ..." was made. Seems to me that a number of
people expect Hispanics to behave better than citizens do. Puerto Ricans
have done seasonal and year-round work in the Mid-Atlantic state for 50+
years. Sure, there are some cultural differences that can lead to
conflicts. And, yes, there are Hispanic criminals. But like black crime,
the majority is against members of the same race/ethnicity. As for drugs,
they're "our" problem. If citizens stopped buying them, most of the
problem would go away.

You may not be aware of it, but Puerto Ricans ARE American citizens.
Pretty much by definition, they are behaving like citizens, and resent
being lumped in your "Hispanic" basket with illegal Mexicans. In fact,
a group that is very vocal in its opposition to illegal immigration is
the legal immigrants of Mexican background, who don't care to be
associated with the scum that are oozing north across the border.

So what is the basis for the fear of Hispanics? They speak a different
language so many citizens don't know what they're saying about "us". The
majority are industrious so eventually they'll end up with citizens' jobs?

Certainly the lot of poor Americans has deteriorated markedly because of
illegal immigration. There are only so many unskilled jobs and low rent
housing units available. However, Americans are not known for being
concerned with the plight of poor people. On the top end, the concern
is the economic impact on Texas and California. Those states together
do a lot to drive the US economic engine, and they are showing the
strain. New Mexico and Arizona are in worse shape, but there's little
money there, so nobody cares.

If things don't get any worse than they are now, it won't be so bad, but
there is no sign that anything is getting better. Illegal immigration
continues to accelerate. 20 years from now, we will be looking at a
population of 50 million illegals, almost 20% of the current US
population. What are we supposed to do with them?
