Re: Incinolet vs. chemical toilets

Louis,
Thanks for your response, it's very helpful. Do you mind if I ask you a
few questions?
1. You mentioned that there's a "burning trash" odor while the heating
takes place. How long doest it typically last - I've read that the full
burning cycle could take up to 1.5 hour...?

I've never timed it but it seems more like a half hour to me. If the unit is vented properly you won't smell anything indoors. The building mine is in is mostly underground and the vent is just above the surface. I can only smell it outside near the level of the vent. Nothing inside.

2. Noice? Somebody mentioned that the Incinolet makes some noice during
the burning cycle. True? If yes, how loud?

There is a fan which is not much louder than the fan on a PC. The fan is bigger than that but most of the noise goes out the vent pipe. My unit is in the same room as an 8kW Lorain power inverter and an air dryer so I never hear it. It might be annoying if you're trying to sleep in the same room with it. It's not as noisy as a room air conditioner.

3. I've also read somewhere that the toilet can heat up to really high
temeratures during the burning cycle. Is this true?

The chamber where the evaporation and burning takes place is very hot. Red incandescent which is somewhere around 900 to 1000F. However if the jaws which drop the contents aren't opened the unit can still be used as the fan draws air which keeps the "user" surfaces cool.
Don't open the trap or you'll get singed. I've never dropped cold waste into the hot chamber. I'd expect it to steam a bit.

4. I assume that the liners designed to hold urine i.e. don't fall
appart when wet. Is this the case?

The liners do hold urine at least for a while. It's expected though to cycle the contents after each use, not to let it sit unflushed.

I'm in the process of building a home for myself and wife close to my observatory. I'm going to the expense of puting in a proper septic system and piping water nearly 1000' from an exisiting well.. While the Incinolet is certainly better, especially in bad weather, than "a path to the woods" and better than any chemical toilet or outhouse I've had the misfortune to use, I would not choose one for my permanent residence.
