I have some questions is the liner absolutely necessary or does it just simplify cleaning?
If you don't use the liner you'll get crap on the stainless jaws that open to drop the contents into the lower bowl. That part doesn't get hot so it won't burn off. You could then clean it manually. If you enjoy that I suppose the liners wouldn't be aboslutely necessary. The liners aren't a major expense, certainly less than the power used per flush.
They mention a catalyst. Have you had to replace yours?
No. Ive never replaced a cataliytic converter on a car either.
They mention fairly frequent cleaning of the fan and the procedure
looks somewhat involved, especially in tight spaces. Do you maintain
yours that often?
I look at the bowl occasionally and if looks needed I'll dump the contents. It's just hard ash with no odor. Maybe needed once a year. Mine isn't in a tight space.
How do you power yours?
120 volt 20amp standard 3 wire outlet served by commercial power. It's not on the batter backup inverters used by the computers and telescopes.
Is yours mounted permanently or is it portable?
I consider it permanent though it isn't bolted down. It's in the room with the power backup equipment (batteries and inverters). The unit needs a vent to the outdoors. If I had to move it I could probably have it in my pickup in under 10 minutes. It's a bit heavy to lift.
I'm thinking about one for my small motorhome so as to free up holding
tank space for other sources of wastewater. My bathroom is tiny so
I'm a bit concerned about space and about having to do maintenance.
Have you ever heard of a fuel-powered one?
No, but I haven't looked for one.
Propane or diesel would be
much more suitable for my needs.
I don't see why it wouldn't work. It still needs the fan, but that could be 12 volt.
