But, hey, it's just a cartoon!
True and one I've never managed to get into. Now "American Dad" is
one I do like.
I haven't seen "American Dad."
The Simpsons is (IMO and many others) one of the best shows on TV. Many of
the writers were educated at our top universities. There are all kinds of
historical and cultural references which just go over the heads of kids and
relatively un-educated adults.
The same was true for many of the classic Loonie Tunes/Merry Melodies cartoons.
No way that kids were going to catch some of those references. Rocky and
Bullwinkle -- the same. Jay Ward and Bill Scott had an earlier series called
Crusader Rabbit with his sidekick Rags the Tiger (who started every sentence
with 'Duh' even when he fell off the cliff and shouted "Duh Help!") and their
enemy Dudley Nightshade (and his sidekick Bilious Green). When prospecting
for uranium they took with them a fission pole. Definitely not kid stuff.
Soupy Sails and Fang playing the letter game:
Soupy holds up a card showing "F".
Fang says "K".
Soupy does a double take and shows the card again.
Fang says "K" again.
Soupy does another double take, grins, scratches his head, looks at the camera and says, "What's going on here, I see F you see K?"
The end of a brilliant career...
