Why young livestock... an adult black bear can take down any full grown

According to a google search black bears can hit about 35 miles per
hour which is close to the speed of a horse or deer.
A human can't even hit half that speed so if you try to outrun one all
your going to do is die tired.
Odds are you'll never get to run long enough to get tired... best you
can do is get down on the ground, roll into a ball, and quietly pray
you can fly.
Actually, a much better idea is to carry some relatively heavy artillery
(.30-06, .300 Win Mag, .308, or comparable, loaded with rounds sporting
165-180 grain bullets, or a 12 gauge loaded with slugs or double-ought
buckshot would all be reasonably good choices) when tromping through
bear country. And do remember: If you find yourself in a situation where
Mr(s). Bear is coming at you, aim to wipe out the shoulder - unless you
WANT him/her in your lap and "tearing you a new one" before (s)he
decides to expire. Putting one "in the boiler room" from a distance is
fine, and will do the job - eventually... But if it's coming at you
"eventually" isn't anywhere near soon enough. You need a hit that's not
just "a kill", but an instant "face-plant". Trashing the shoulder will
give you that, allowing you plenty of time for however many followup
shots may be needed to finish the job. (Although ideally, none will be
needed, since unless the angle is particularly bad, a shoulder shot is
PROBABLY also a "boiler room" shot as a bonus)
