i don't understand why poultry producers aren't innoculating
thier flocks... ok, i know it's not worth it to mega-farms, but why
aren't more small flock owners doing so?
Is there a vaccine for poultry for the H5N1 bird flu?
i haven't really checked with the vet, but they've certainly had enough
time to develop one in the past 5 years... the whole NAIS & avian flu
thing is starting to bug me, since i have a very small flock with some
very rare breeds... and i free range my chooks. i hate the idea that
the factory farms with thier monoculture stock get preferential
treatment, while those of us *trying* to protect genetic diversity get
screwed.

"The French programme approved today means the vaccination of around
900,000 ducks and geese in the departments of Landes, Loire-Atlantique and
Vendee - now considered high-risk areas - will begin immediately and will
run until April 1.
"Vaccination was deemed necessary for the ducks and geese in these regions
due to the fact that these birds cannot be easily put indoors ...
therefore their effective separation from potentially infected wild birds
cannot be assured," the commission said in a statement.
The Dutch programme applies to "hobby poultry" and free-range laying hens
throughout the country - up to eight million birds in total."

"Britain has ordered 2m doses of avian flu vaccine for captive rare and
endangered birds but the treatments may take two months to arrive, the
environment department said last night.
Zoos in the UK, which have been pressing for standby stocks, greeted the
news with relief. Some zoos in Europe have begun vaccinating already, and
yesterday the European commission gave France and the Netherlands
permission to start poultry immunisation schemes."
