Hey Ann, why isn't that small dairy farm viable anymore? The stock answer I get from some folks here in Wisconsin who may ultimately be driven out of business by NAIS is that they can't grow their business large enough to compete with factory dairy farms that run between 1000 and 15000 head on their 200 acre setups in California. It will be easy for the big guys who move their animals on and off of their premises in group lots as they won't be required to tag the animals, just provide a lot number. Small producers will have to chip every individual animal and record any movement of that animal or report its slaughter on premises within 24 hours of its demise. The mountain of paperwork will make the intelligence gathering surveys by the NSA look like small potatoes. The dairy farmers with 150-300 head here sell the milk to local cheese factories and specialty markets. Those local markets and cheese factories will be forced out of business and in the end our food production will wind up in the hands of a few conglomerates. Do away with the competition in this industry and you do away with the ability to choose what it is you put on your plate for dinner, or if you can even afford to buy the food at all....If every small producer of free range chickens here in Wisconsin has to insert a $3 chip in each chicken they keep on premises or sell to the public direct from their farm, it will drive them out of business also. So go ahead embrace the brave new world. Learn to eat bulgar wheat like most of the rest of the planet does because animal protien will come at premium prices in the future as a result of the new regulations if they are allowed to be forced on small producers...
