Agreed that the ID system is all about protecting the US export market.
And it's not only the fat cats at Tyson et al that benefit. We really
can't afford to have our balance of payments go further into the dumper.
Plus, there are all those people who work for and sell to agribusiness.
And, the smaller producers (not just beef) who would be hurt by a glut of
beef on the market and a cut in production.

I don't agree though that the "ballot box" is driving the USDA's actions.
At worst, an unpopular decision will result in a few people not going to
the polls at all. But the administration will minimize the effect by
cranking up the fear machine and refocusing on the hot-button social
issues that served them so well in previous elections.
