Tracking of meat from the paddock to the plate is now something that can be
expected if the US wants to sell into fussy markets like Japan and Europe.

I notice that the US proposal is still voluntary so enjoy it while you can.
Most of the rest of the world has a compulsory system of livestock
identification and manages to see some benefits in it. The US will also go
compulsory once it realises that it will have trouble bullying markets to
take unidentifiable meat as opposed to being able to get meat that is fully
traceable.

The recent reinstatement of the ban on US meat after only lifting the ban in
December is just an idication of the fussiness of markets. Only pissant
little producers will have a problem with it and if they sell to hobbyists
then they will probably not have to worry too much.
