That whole damnation thing is the basis of creationist fervor. If
there was no creation, no "Fall of Man" and no implacable curse of a
vengeful god, there is nothing to save you from, and no need for a
savior. Paleontology, archaeology and biology have struck a mortal
blow at the theological basis of Christianity, at least as it has been
practiced for the last 1500 years.

Interestingly, it is doubtful that Jesus believed in an afterlife. The
temple Jews believed that the covenant was in this world, and only a
few select saints went to heaven and got their own constellation. The
Pharisees believed in resurrection, which was apparently an admix of
Egyptian mystery cult. Jesus apparently didn't care much for
Pharisees. The closest thing to the concept of heaven and hell was the
Zoroastrian religion in neighboring Persia.

Religions are promiscuous things. The only feature I can think of that
Christianity has, that is absent in other religions, is the Baptism of
Repentance, developed by Jesus' cousin John as a very effective means
of guilt resolution. It would be ironic if the future of Christianity
belonged to the Dunkers. :)
