Years ago, a youngish New Jersey state policeman offered me a ride on
the long ramp between the Turnpike and the Parkway (both superhighways)
when I was hitchiking with a backpack and a beard.

He said "what's in the backpack?"

I smiled and asked if he wanted to search it. He said "Sure," and we opened
it up on his hood (bonnet?), and he found a suspicious vegetable--an avocado.
He'd never seen one, and it took a while to convince him that it was not
an illegal drug :-)
