Larry, thanks for the info on the water mocassin. I couldn't read your
message till I got back on air and had to go to google groups to check it
out - my modem
got fried in a storm.
When I read your message I remembered that I should have known about the
necrotic wounds from these (and other) US snakes. Very nasty wounds they
leave even if not as deadly as our Joe Blakes.
As a child, I always used to wonder about the old faith healers of the US
who used to pick up rattlers (and annual snake hunts for rattlers!!!!) but
then in those days I thought that all venomous snake bites resulted in death
like (all too often) bites from our snakes can.
You are right too about the neurotoxins in our snakes. Apparently the only
US one of a similar nature is the Coral Snake although I also seem to recall
that one of the big rattlers from the western part of the has got a fair
degree of neurotoxins added in its venom - can't remember which one, but I
do recall that it delivers a big payload of venom when it does bite.
The local snakes I have round here have very nasty venom. The tiger snake,
which is the one I had the encounter with, has venom that is supposedly 4
times as toxic as a Cobra's and the other local (the Eastern Brown) has
venom which is 12 times more toxic than a Cobra. The bite incidence is
higher for a Tiger Snake though than a Brown.
