As far as I'm concerned (having lived with both) LP is cleaner and
easier to store over the long haul. I buy once a year now at summer
prices and don't have to worry about accumulation of water or the
fuel getting sluggish in the cold weather (I remember having to add
heat tape to the oil line going to the furnace in suburban Chicago).
Spills, if any, dissipate into the atmosphere leaving no mess to
clean up.
Over the long haul, an LP furnace takes a whole lot less maintenance,
in my experience, than an oil fired unit and the purchase price is
lower as well.
As far as safety is concerned a maladjusted oil furnace can soot up
your chimney in a hurry. An LP unit discharges out the side wall of
the basement in pvc pipe and none of mine have ever sooted up in the
past 14 years I've been running high efficiency gas furnaces both
natural gas and LP.
I have managed to grow mold in the condensate line with the effect
that the unit shuts down on one of the several safety cutouts. An
annual (fall) flush with clorox took care of the problem in
subsequent years.
Like everything else, install it right and maintain it right to
almost never have a serious problem.
