Dead people don't wake up; we don't get do-overs. Imo, you should get
yourself to an MD and see about getting some counseling ... to help you
get to a place where you can look at your situation objectively. Most
places have agencies that base their fee on income. And certainly, where
you are, the social workers have experience with displaced farmers.
>From what you posted to m.r, my sense of it was that the cows did not
provide enough income to live on. (If they had, a bank would have been
willing to loan you what you needed to buy your own equipment and hire
part-time help.) So the reality, based on your experience, is that the
best you should expect - raising beef cattle as you prefer to do it - is
to break even. Imo, it is not unrealistic that you will be able to raise
a few beef cattle again ... simply because you love to do it. It's not a
case of "now or never".
Do look into job training programs. But be very cautious about those that
require you to borrow money. (Any number of people are still paying on
loans for computer training for jobs that are now in India.) It may be
some painful, but don't cut yourself off from the pasture-raised, farmers'
market, etc. groups you've participated in. I thought of you a couple
months ago when one of the network news programs (weekend AM, iirc) had a
piece on wormen in agriculture. The number is increasing in states like
Maine and, while women farmers' income is lower, they do better at
marketing their products. If you stay connected, you may find that you'd
do better (in terms of long term goals) in another area ... or might even
get a lead to a job.
In other words, concentrate now of getting on your feet financially and
emotionally, but - if you want to - keep the (scaled back) dream alive.
