As with all my projects, I first get advice from the Internet, local
dealers, the manufacturer, the building inspector, and in this case, the
insurance company as well. The more advice and knowledge, the better.
I also installed my own hearth, stove, and chimney. I first attempted to
have someone else do it, but after two contractors did not return my calls
and one missed two appointments to show up at my house, I decided to do it
myself. The building inspector told me "good job" after inspecting my work.
I said "Well I cheated and asked you [inspector] for advice before doing the
work." He said he would rather people ask how to do something beforehand
than for him to go out and have to tell them to re-do the work.

Actually my model of wood stove came with a round "air intake connection" on
the back, onto which you can connect a metal flexible duct and then connect
that to an outside vent - which I did. So the cold air goes directly into
the wood stove and it does not bring cold air into the house. This is the
best thing I did. I really like this feature, don't need to have any windows
open, etc. These connections are on wood stoves approved for manufactured
homes and are a requirement, although I have a stick house and it was not a
requirement.
