One thing that makes hard times a lot easier is saving money in good
times. The best idea is to live frugally when you can afford better.
For example, when I replaced my old pickup last year, I bought a left
over 2003 model. The local dealer had brokered in 100 of them that
didn't sell in 2003, so he knocked $8400 off the sticker price and used
them to boost his numbers with the manufacturer, even though he wasn't
making any money. He wouldn't give me anything in trade-in on my old
pickup, no room to dicker, so I had to sell it myself, but I ended up
with a new truck for 2/3 the price of the current year's model. Since I
run vehicles until the wheels fall off, I didn't care at all. My last
pickup lasted 15 years, and didn't owe me a thing.

All the money I save goes into a savings account. I have no car
payment. I paid cash. I have several credit cards, but no outstanding
balance on any of them. Many years ago, I learned not to sell myself
into debt slavery just because I wanted something I couldn't afford.
I'm using a fairly new computer and a brand new 20" flat panel monitor,
but am still using a laser printer that I bought in 1991. I have a new
tractor, but use farm implements that my dad bought in the 1950s. And
these are the good times. The $100 her and $500 there will come in real
handy ten years from now, when I am retired.
