Was the refrigerator running at the same time as the well pump? Is anything
else on the refrigerator circuit besides the refrigerator? The well pump
might have placed a very large load on the generator when it was first
starting up, and there might not have been enough power available if the
refrigerator was running at the same time. (See links below.)

What I would do is keep the well pump off and let the refrigerator run,
then turn the refrigerator off and let *only* the well pump run until the
tank is full/shower completed, etc., then turn well pump off and
refrigerator back on.
