In defense of race cars, I'd like to point out that racing is basically the
R&D department for most manufacturers.
A friend of mine has come up with a new engine that is twice as efficient as
what's available now. Unfortunately, because it is so different from
standard engines, even the Wankel, it doesn't qualify for racing, so it's
hard to develop, or to find investor's for. All the money out there for
development that the government likes to talk about has big catches. They
take over all patents, or stuff like that. The half million dollar grant
from one energy commission, provided only $50,000 for the engine (to develop
it, build it, patent it, etc), with the other $450,000 for the commission to
use to test it! That would barely cover incidental legal/patent fees.
18" x 18" x 12", less than 50lb, 200 hp, variable compression ratio
carburetor, super charged, and ultra simple.
