Historic gasoline prices, 1965-1978

>From (before) 1965 through 1978, state and local gasoline taxes were an
itemized deduction on federal income tax returns. So, I hauled out the
box of returns and looked through gas receiptrs. No, I didn't actually
run the average prices so the following numbers are approximations Money
amounts are US, in cents.
[1965] - 32 (avg) Of this, 4 cents was federal tax and 6-7 (it went up
during '65) was state tax. The state tax went to 8 in '73.
[1966] - 34 | [1967] 35 | [1968] 35 | [1969] 34 }
[1970 - 1972] didn't itemize so hadn't kept the receipts
[1973] - 38 - Toward the end of the year, prices started up.
[1974] - 52 - Started the yr at 43, went to 57, ending at 52
[1975] - 54 - Had fallen to 46 by April, but ended the month at 54
[1976] - 56 ; range 49-58
[1977] - 59 ; range 55-64
[1978] - 62 ; range 57-68
