Actually, it was probably the Democratic Establishment that got rid of Dodd. Dodd was becoming such a liability that there was a growing possibility that the Republicans may well have captured the seat. By stepping aside, pushed, whatever, he probably saved the seat for the Democrats. It's certainly not a give-me any more, but best guess is that even a mediocre Democratic candidate can retain the seat for the Democrats. No matter what, resources (i.e money) are going to have to be diverted into a race that no one expected to be at all competitive..
Charlie Rangel is probably next. (And dammit, I liked Charlie. I wouldn't vote for him for dog catcher, but he certainly is an entertaining character.)
