Re: Obama reins in Stanley McChrystal

JJ,

Agreed. it is amazing what the Press can try to make of SOP.

The Pentagon has hundreds devoted to developing alternative strategies and
tactics. There is no shortage of alternatives. But a General sould NOT pick
any particular one as his preferred one and publicly 'campaign' for it,
either here, or overseas. He does not have that license.

There are things the CIC knows that McChrystal does _not_ know. McChrystal
does not have a Yankee White clearance. It is that simple.

I agree that McChrystal needs to STFU. He's a General, not a Politican. Bush
may have needed Petraeus as a political mouthpiece, but that is not why
McChrystal got his job (I'm also reminded of Schwartzkopf when Powell
ordered him to stop at the Iraqi border, McArthur when he didn't get his
way, and many others).

If McChrystal wants to chat with the Press other than by a direct order or
implied consent, he needs to resign his commission and run for office and
get elected to something. Maybe a City Councilman, who can talk about the
decaying sewer system or something, somewhere?

Otherwise, study Eisenhower, or any of the other, perhaps more un-sung
Generals that just quietly did what was needed to execute the Orders they
got from the CIC.

McChrystal cannot write his own Orders. They are not his to write.
