Political parties choose candidates and the Electoral College should cease to exist because it is obsolete. Popular vote should replace the Electoral College.

Nick...

I disagree, concerning the electoral college.

With out the forced distribution of the electoral college, future presidential candidates would concentrate on the largest ten urban areas, in both time and resources, and that would probably be enough.

New York, N.Y.
Los Angeles, Calif.
Chicago, Ill.
Houston, Tex.
Philadelphia, Pa.
Phoenix, Ariz.
San Antonio, Tex.
San Diego, Calif.
Dallas, Tex.
San Jose, Calif.

While the electoral college surely heavily weights the votes of the Dakotas (to pick and extreme case), without it, they might as well not bother to vote at all. It gives new meaning to "flyover" country doesn't it? I truly believe, that the college is one of very few reasons that the Union still exists, because without it, the pressure to dissolve the Union into eight to twelve independent commonwealth countries would be immense.

Yeah, Jim, I'm aware that heavily populated areas would get more of the attention of candidates than lesser populated areas, but that happens now anyway. For example: I can't recall when presidential candidates gave their heavily weighed appearance presentations in Rhode Island (which has 4 Electoral votes). If it weren't for TV and radio, I doubt if in some areas people would know who was running for office.

See "Carriage Abbey Club". Apparently it's a money warehouse and a couple of "candidates" made stops there.
(I couldn't remember either. I had to google it.)

Consider this, California gets to have 55 Electoral votes, Texas gets 34, and Florida gets 27, while Montana and the Dakota's get only 3 for each of the states. Naturally campaigns will be held in densely populated states. However, the representatives in the College are not bound by the popular vote of states and can disregard the votes of the people and vote their preferences. That makes the voting system and final candidate selection iffy.

Nope, Jim, the Electoral College may have been useful at one time but for practical purposes it's obsolete now.

I don't think it's any more "obsolete" than the Senate is obsolete. I think it exists for almost exactly the same reasons.
