Giganews now gives you the option of 128bit SSL data encryption and a
data accelerator for the plaintext. The accelerator is free but the
SSL costs a bit. If you want to make it where Verizon cannot tell what
you are doing on giganews just pay the extra couple of bucks with your
subscription and all traffic will be encrypted end to end.
IOW you can't violate the TOS if the traffic being sent/received is
random gibberish. It won't be traffic that violates the TOS until it's
off of Verizon's network.

"Important ? Verizon Newsgroup Service To Be Discontinued"
One word... giganews.
I don't know what I'll be doing when Verizon shuts down. I've thought
about converting to Forte but haven't actually made up my mind. Seems
as though this type function of the internet is shutting down since
the major ISP servers are shutting down their news servers. There are
freebie news servers but their function will be limited if used
through Verizon.
Ex: "if you want to continue accessing newsgroups, you will need to
configure your newsreader software to connect to your new newsgroup
service. Follow your new service provider's instructions for accessing
their newsgroup service."
Then the notice goes on to say "If you elect to access a non-Verizon
newsgroup service over the Verizon network, our Terms of Service and
Acceptable Use Policy will still apply to your use of our Internet
service." I could get around this control by converting over to using
Forte Agent 'cause Forte has their own newsgroup server but I'm not
sure I want to use Forte when it seems as though the intent is to shut
down such servers.
Verizon has reserved the right to edit what newsgroups I can have
access to. Paying a monthly fee for a monitored service administered
in accordance with Verizon policies seems to me to be foolish, if I
use Verizon's Internet server. I'd be paying for a complete system
which Verizon would control through editing/controlling what I'm able
to access.
Verizon ends the notice with "This change will not affect your ability
to use your Verizon Internet service or other commercial newsgroup
services, and there will not be any change to the price you pay for
your Verizon High Speed Internet or Verizon FiOS Internet service." Of
course they'll be no change in the price.
