I have no ever heard him called that. In the last couple days
since, I have not heard it. If he is called that, I have not heard of
it. I have not been everywhere or heard everything either.

This are some very subtle layers to this.

In my experience, the mainstream Black Community is not big on nicknames. Thus, in my circle of Black acquaintances, James is call James, not Jim, Jimmy or Jamie. Robert is called Robert, not Bob, or Robby. You would be David, not Dave. (I have no idea if that's a universal observation or a very limited regionalism)

In Obama's case, the use of "Barry" serves to highlight his white cultural background to some, while feeding the "is he Black enough" question to others.

A few years into my career with the government, I switched from "Jim" to "James". Believe it or not, some of my family members did not accept the change readily, (my wife for one), and since I didn't consider that big a deal, in some quarters, it's still "Jim".
