Naah, they just have to make enough of it, at a fine enough pitch (the
current crystal only works because microwaves are big and it's easy to etch
structures smaller than they are). I hear some microchip manufacturing
facilities are already pushing 50nm feature sizes, which is around a tenth
of a green light wave (450nm).

For a closed hoop spinning such that the material has a speed u, the tension in the hoop will equal lambda*u^2 which is independent of R (at least for nonrelativistic speeds).... For the helix I suspect that the tension will still be lambda*u^2 except for an extra numerical factor that would depend on the ratio of the pitch to the radius. ... If you know such materials or have better ideas, it would be great to let me know. ... Oxygen works damn well at other frequencies....
